Frequently asked questions regarding Citizen Service Numbers (BSN)

  1. Why do I have to enter my BSN?

As of January 1, 2022, new legislation is in force for the submission of data of authors and composers to the Tax Office. As a result, Buma/Stemra is obliged to pass on Citizen Service Numbers (BSN) to the tax authorities from January 31, 2023 at the latest. You can read exactly how that works at www.bumastemra.nl.

Buma/Stemra has a legal obligation to pass on complete and correct BSN’s to the tax authorities. Failure to do so may result in a fine being imposed by the tax authorities. Buma/Stemra reserves the right to suspend payments and/or pass on fines imposed to members who have not provided any or incorrect information.

Buma/Stemra cannot check whether the information you provide is correct. You remain responsible for this yourself.

  2. When do I have to enter my BSN?

As soon as possible, but no later than December 31, 2022. Did you not enter your BSN by Tuesday, December 13? Then immediately after logging in you will see a screen where you can enter your BSN. Then you can proceed to your data in MijnBumaStemra.

  3. How do I fill in my BSN?

Adding your BSN is only possible through your own secure MijnBumaStemra account. Click on the icon at the top right of your screen to go to ‘My Profile’. Don’t have an MBS account? Then easily create one via this link or go to our website for more information on entering your BSN and creating an account in MijnBumaStemra.

  4. Where can I find my BSN?

You can find your BSN in your passport, ID and driving license, among other things.

  5. Who needs to enter a BSN?

If you are a composer or author, we request that you enter your BSN in MijnBumaStemra no later than December 31, 2022. For heirs, publishers and Authors B.V.’s this obligation does not apply.

  6. I live abroad, do I need to enter BSN?

Everyone who has a BSN must provide it. Buma/Stemra has a legal obligation to pass on the numbers of everyone who has a BSN to the tax authorities. They are the only ones who can determine whether you are a taxpayer in the Netherlands.

  7. Why is my entire BSN not visible in MBS?

Due to privacy laws your BSN is protected. For identification purposes only the first 3 digits and the last digit are visible. Is the number not correct or has your tax liability changed? You can change this in your MijnBumaStemra account. Click on the icon at the top right of your screen and choose ‘My profile’. Then click on the change button where you previously entered your BSN. Please do not include your BSN in your e-mail.

  8. What does Buma/Stemra do with my BSN?

  11. I do not have a computer or tablet or email address, what should I do?

If you do not have a computer or tablet and there is no computer or tablet available at friends/family or the library, for example, you can come to Buma/Stemra and create an account with the help of an employee. Then you can enter your BSN on the spot.

If you do not have an e-mail address, we can send an invitation to create an account to another e-mail address upon request (e.g. from friends/family). You then activate the account in MijnBumaStemra together, where you have to identify yourself in the process. After that, you can enter the BSN in your account yourself.
