Home Copying Levy
Who pays the home copying levy? And to whom?
Manufacturers and importers of blank recording media in the Netherlands pay a fee to the Stichting de Thuiskopie (Home copy Foundation). The foundation distributes the money to composers, lyricists and music publishers. Manufacturers and importers may pass on the fee to the consumer.
Do I have to pay when I listen to music on my iPod/Smartphone/Tablet?
Musical works and other copyright protected works may only be reproduced and made public with the permission of the rightholders. If you are listening to music on your iPod/Smartphone/Tablet without the intention that others can hear this, there is no question of publication, and you therefore do not need to ask the permission of the rightholders.
