The more music you make and the more it is heard, the more difficult it becomes to check when and where your work can be heard in public. It is a comfortable feeling to know that you can leave that job to a professional organisation like Buma/Stemra.
Being a member of Buma/Stemra is sensible if works that you have written yourself are regularly heard on radio or TV, if you regularly perform your work or if your works are recorded on CD or DVD. If you do not create a lot of compositions or lyrics and if you are able to check yourself where and when they are being used, you can handle the commercial exploitation of the rights yourself, instead of joining Buma/Stemra. In that case, you are able to determine the conditions yourself and collect remunerations if your work is used.
