Buma/Stemra and Creative Commons Nederland are starting a pilot
8/27/2007
Buma/Stemra and Creative Commons Nederland are starting a pilot allowing members of Buma/Stemra to make their musical works available under non-commercial Creative Commons licences. Composers and lyricists who until now released their work exclusively under Creative Commons licences can also choose to become members of Buma/Stemra, enabling that organisation to collect the remunerations for commercial use of their work. Buma/Stemra and Creative Commons Nederland intend to use this pilot to give Dutch creators of musical works more possibilities for promoting their own repertoires.
Buma/Stemra is very pleased with this pilot, which will offer music creators greater freedom in the choice between commercial and non-commercial exploitation of their works. The rise of the Internet is demanding greater flexibility in the way copyright is managed. This is the reason why Buma/Stemra has been investigating the possibilities since 2005 through the Flexco project, so that new technological developments can be used to personalise services, without compromising the collective approach. Cees Vervoord, Chairman of the Board of Buma/Stemra, said, “This initiative fits in with our efforts to provide the best possible service to our rightholders. We hope that this pilot will let us provide better facilities for music authors to promote their own repertoires.”
