Buma / Stemra responds to public discussion about charges for embedded files
11/16/2009
Hoofddorp, 9th of October 2009 - Buma / Stemra advocates for the right of authors and composers of music. This profession has expressed it is pleased that it's repertoire is being used increasingly on the internet but must conclude that in most cases there's no reasonable charge for this online usage.
Set against this background Buma / Stemra has published it's charges for the use of music on the internet on the first of October 2009 for the year 2010. Included in these charges was the part about non-professional usage of music through so-called embedded files. This part of the charges has caused some concerns in the public- and political sphere. Buma / Stemra has closely examined these concerns. After discussions with the industry representative VOICE Buma / Stemra has decided not to imply the charges of non professional usage of music through embedded files (usage such as private profiles on social networks).
Buma / Stemra remains convinced that there needs to be a suitable charge for author and composers of music for the online use of their work. To develop such a charge Buma / Stemra will meet with concerned parties. Together with VOICE Buma / Stemra will seek to discuss these matters with the Dutch Minister of Justice.
