Remuneration if somebody makes use of your music
The level of returns on a creation depends on many factors, for instance where the music was performed or played, or the sound or image carrier on which it was recorded. The question of how many times a creation has been heard is also important, as is the duration of the work and the size of the production run of the sound carriers.
Remuneration by Buma when your creations are used in public
If your music is performed or played in public, Buma will handle your remunerations. For example, this is the case if your creation is heard in:
- work areas and staff canteens
- the hospitality industry
- supermarkets/department stores
- sales areas
- fitness centres
- schools (primary or secondary)
- locations such as care institutions
- social welfare institutions
- amateur music associations
- events
An important aspect for determining the level of remunerations is the scale of use of the music. This is understood to involve not only the number of people who hear the music and how often the music is played, but also the floor area of the location where the music can be heard.
Remuneration by Stemra when your music is recorded
If somebody wants to record music on image or sound carriers, Stemra will arrange the permission and remunerations. This relates to:
- audiovisual productions
- independent productions
- independent audio productions
- special products
- background music
The commercial interest is important when determining the level of the remunerations. This could be the size of the production run for the sound carrier, the price, or the area over which it is distributed.
Use of music abroad
You are also entitled to remuneration when your creations are heard abroad. Buma/Stemra collects these remunerations for you as well, since it hasĀ
close ties with sister organisations abroad. The amount this yields depends on the arrangements with the music copyright organisations in the country involved and the repartition keys they use. All the money that Buma/Stemra receives from abroad will be distributed directly, after withholding a small percentage to cover costs.
