Copyright
People who have created lyrics or compositions are proud of them. They do not want anyone else simply to modify their creation or make money from it. Copyright gives the author the final say in what happens to his work. He is legally the only one who can make decisions about his creation. But what else is involved in copyright?

Why have music copyright?
An author has a personal bond with his works. The Auteurswet (Dutch Copyright Act) allows him to decide what happens to his creations.
The creator and his work
As far as copyright is concerned, the music author is the person who creates a composition or lyrics. Some do this professionally, others privately.

Exploitation via Buma/Stemra
It is impossible in practice for music authors to find out how and when their work is being used. This is why 16,000 music authors leave copyright exploitation to Buma/Stemra.

International regulations
Copyright does not end at the border. Dutch music played in a Belgian café or on the radio in England also deserves remuneration.
